This exciting entrepreneurial shift in the education marketplace is adding choices and options families have never had before and prompting important conversations about the future of education policy, including discussions about ways to unbundle learning, revamp assessments, and address teacher shortages.
Join us on Monday for a pre-conference workshop and discussion with three entrepreneurs who are exploring new policy ideas to tackle today's pressing challenges.

The 5K for Freedom is a great opportunity to stretch your legs and see the local area. You won't want to miss this year—the custom course will take runners around some of Atlanta’s most notable downtown attractions including the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Georgia Aquarium, the College Football Hall of Fame, CNN Center, and Centennial Olympic Park!

3. Test Your Skill or Learn a New One: Chess Class and Tournament

The SPN Annual Meeting tradition continues—this year with an inspiring addition! Chess players and observers of all levels of experience are invited to join the fun throughout the week.
- Meet-Up: Chess Class and Refresher - Monday, Sept. 19
Casual play follows a refresher chess lesson, taught by a National Master. Connect with other rusty chess players as you recall the strategies and tactics you may have forgotten.
- Chess Tournament: Simultaneous Exhibition - Monday, Sept. 19
National Master Roger Poehlmann will play up to 12 opponents simultaneously.
- Chess Tournament: Casual Play and Tournament - Monday, Sept. 19 - Tuesday, Sept. 20
Casual games and instruction will be available for all levels of players. A tournament ladder allows for participants to play any number of games with no eliminations.
- Chess Tournament: Playoff Game - Wednesday, Sept. 21
The top two tournament finishers face off in a playoff game for the 2022 Chess Champion for Liberty title.
The friendly competition will culminate at the Awards Dinner on Wednesday night when the Illinois Policy Institute will present the tournament winner with the inaugural Joe Ocol Cup.
The Joe Ocol Cup: Honoring a Community Hero

For more than a decade, Chicago math teacher Joe Ocol has used chess to champion change. His students – often written off because of where they come from – have won major tournaments, met with a sitting US president and earned coveted college scholarships. Joe has also stood up for his students, crossing union picket lines and lockouts to put his students above union politics.

|
This year, the Illinois Policy Institute has named the tournament trophy the Joe Ocol Cup in recognition of Joe's dedication to his students and to preparing them for future success. In addition to celebrating Joe's efforts, the cup also underscores the value of working with non-traditional partners and community leaders to achieve change at the local level.
