Hi John, Supermarkets are trying hard to convince us they are tackling throwaway plastic. The truth is, in the past year they have put more plastic on their shelves than ever before. [1][2] Let’s do what supermarkets don’t want us to - call them out on social media and expose their lack of plastic action. Can you create your very own supermarket advert and share it on social media so they feel the pressure? It’ll only take a minute. Plastic is choking our oceans, and even ending up on our plates - every industry needs to do its bit to stop plastic polluting our planet. [3]
Last year, we created a league table ranking the UK’s major supermarkets, and although some have made small improvements, they are still responsible for putting over 900,000 tonnes of plastic on their shelves in the last year. [4] In fact, since 2017, the UK's top 10 supermarkets have been responsible for putting 1.8 million tonnes of plastic on their shelves. But you wouldn’t have guessed that from their marketing spin. Can you pile the pressure on supermarkets? Spoof their slick advertising and share it on social media to expose their lack of plastic action! The good news is public opinion is on our side. Mass movements of people have led to action, like the ban on microbeads and Sainsbury's recent plastic reduction commitments. [6] Together our voice is stronger, so make yours heard.
Thank you for everything you do
