Hey Team, this is Jessica Mason. Below is a long personal message I wrote while reflecting. Thanks in advance for taking the time to hear me out.

It’s definitely been an exciting midterm election year for Barrier to Entry. We’ve had some incredible election victories across the country like Shenise Turner-Sloss in Ohio, Jamie McLeod-Skinner in Oregon, Shaquana Boykin in New York, and more. And we’ve also endured some pretty heartbreaking losses like Kimi Cole in Nevada, Joe Thompson in California, and myself.

Take it from me, a former B/E candidate who didn’t win my primary election for Congress in TX-30 this March: I know how bad it hurts to lose. But coming from a low-income, working-class background with little resources and refusing to accept any corporate money, I never would have been able to run as competitive a campaign as I did without B/E and all of our grassroots supporters like you. So despite walking away without a victory this time around, I'm proud of the work we did and the momentum we built from the ground up. We mobilized, we organized, and we put our hearts into an honest race that represented our values. And I’m confident that we had a meaningful impact on the progressive movement and am hopeful that it inspired other young, poor Black kids across the country that they can run, too.

My point is that there will always be ups and downs — it comes with the territory when shaking the ground up for progressive change. We’re in this fight for the underdogs, the candidates that are written off, the ones who don’t have the advantages or privileges, the leaders championing ambitious policies that others label as "too bold". Because we know that it takes guts and grit and bravery to challenge the status quo and demand better.

So we know it’s not easy work, and we know the barriers that these types of low-income and underfunded candidates are up against. But we do this because we also know how critical it is to have actual working-class people representing the working class. With everything going on our country, from abortion rights being dismantled to gun violence running rampant, the last thing we need is more out-of-touch corporate elitist politicians making the life decisions that impact us and our livelihoods. With so much at stake, we MUST keep fighting if we want to see change.

After my primary, I took some time off for myself to focus on my mental health. Then, I came right back into things ready to break barriers as B/E’s Director of Campaigns so that I could help uplift other progressive candidates like me who have what it takes to make a difference in their communities but lack the necessary resources and funding. However, right now, I’m getting worried that we might have to scale back and limit what we’re able to provide for our candidates because we’re falling behind on our fundraising numbers.

That’s why I’m asking you sincerely and personally today if you would consider donating any amount right now to help us support our working-class progressive candidates as they struggle to pave their way in a political space that favors those who already have the upper hand. We need to raise $6,915 by tomorrow’s urgent mid-month deadline if we’re going to get back on track — will you help us hit this critical goal by donating $25 or any amount right now?
