Dear John,

With OLCV hosting a set of events for our summer engagement series, and a plethora of exciting events planned by climate champs we’ve endorsed, there’s a lot to look forward to this summer!

OLCV is proud to announce “This is How we Win: Climate Organizing 100 Series,” a trio of youth-focused workshops happening from late July through September focused on educating others about the different levels of work that contribute towards a strong, successful environmental movement. Each event is an entry-level course tackling individual components of climate organizing akin to what we do here at OLCV. These courses include:

-Demystifying the Legislative Process 101: which will break down how Oregon’s legislative sessions function to inform attendees about how we can work with our legislators to pass important climate policy. This course will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, July 27th from 5:30 - 6:45pm, and will reflect on how successful climate legislation has been passed previously, in addition to forecasting what’s at stake on the ballot this November.

-Winning Elections 101: a comprehensive examination of the organizing power that drives successful campaigns and what you can do to get involved in supporting meaningful electoral initiatives. This training will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, August 31st from 5:30 - 6:45pm.

-Canvassing 101: a guide for how we can take the organizing lessons from the other two courses and practice them to successfully advocate for the election of OLCV-endorsed climate champion, Tina Kotek, in her race to be Oregon’s next governor. This in-person event will take place in Portland on Wednesday, September 28th from 5:30 - 8:00pm; exact location TBD.

The first two trainings will be held online, and the final training, Canvassing 101, will take place in-person at a location in Portland yet to be determined (virtual option available). We strongly encourage everyone to attend these events to learn more about what goes into environmental organizing– especially youth who care about our planet and are interested in getting involved with climate activism.

But that’s not all! Other events that should be on your radar are screenings of the film “ELEMENTAL”, directed by Trip Jennings and narrated by David Oyelowo. The powerful documentary redefines the relationship between wildfires and human life, pushing us to reconsider the role of these natural blazes in our ecosystems and teaching us what we can do to stay truly resilient against them in hopes of inspiring forward-thinking wildfire policy.

The film premieres in Portland on July 20th, but will be expanding its theatrical run to cinemas around Oregon and along the west coast, with more screenings in different cities yet to be announced. Find a showing near you!

We strongly encourage you to attend at least one of these amazing events, if not all of them. No matter what, it’s important to stay aware of all the different ways we can remain engaged in the fight for our climate. Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there!

Thank you,

Britney VanCitters, Organizing Manager, OLCV
