John,

Last month marked the 30th anniversary of one of the most important events in my entire life: the student-led Velvet Revolution, wherein nearly a million people peacefully demonstrated for an end to Communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia, where I grew up.

I was 12 years old. I was just old enough to understand what was going on and old enough to begin considering politics in a very real way. The Velvet Revolution inspired me then and continues to inspire me today, and last month, the Arizona Daily Star did me a great honor by publishing an op-ed about my experience.

Much of what we experienced before and after 1989 in Eastern Europe informed my current politics. I’d seen the failures of a one-party, state-run system, but I would go on to see that a two-party system isn’t necessarily the right answer, either. I realized that corruption can take many forms; under Communism, bribery was common, and in the United States, some corruption is even legal—like the ability for corporations to seize control of our legislative agenda by pouring billions into politicians’ pockets.

My Velvet Revolution-based revelations didn’t end with politics. Seeing how we lived before and after the Soviet Union fell, and how we live in America today, has given me perspectives on social, civil, and environmental priorities that we must address in Congress with vigor.

My hope is that young Americans, like the young people who led the charge in the Velvet Revolution, will carry this country toward progress and demand the fundamental changes we need to make in our current and broken system. We hope you’ll join our team and support the revolution that needs to happen right here in the U.S.: the revolution for a brand-new Congress.

I also welcome your thoughts on what I’ve shared with you today. Please feel free to respond to this email to let me know what you think, and I hope you’ll visit our website to read the full version of my op-ed. [[link removed]]

In Solidarity,

Eva
