Elon Musk ends his bid to acquire Twitter.

Hey there --

We did it. We stopped the deal.

Last week, Elon Musk announced he is ending his bid to acquire Twitter. This is a huge win for our information ecosystem.

Elon Musk never cared about Twitter's users or employees, shareholders or advertisers, or promoting the public good. Now, he and Twitter head towards a protracted legal battle.

Musk has made it clear from the start that his vision for Twitter would pose a dire threat to user safety and democratic ideals. It’s why we have fought tooth and nail to upend this agreement, leading the “Stop the Deal” campaign with more than a dozen nonprofit partners.

Together, we’ve pushed Twitter advertisers to take a stand, called for a Congressional investigation into the possible exploitation of internal data, and until it is no longer necessary, we will continue to pursue all financial and regulatory avenues to stop the acquisition.

Our efforts even got the attention of Elon Musk himself, who tweeted multiple times about our letter to Twitter advertisers. But it’s not easy going up to bat with the world’s wealthiest person. Our work couldn’t happen without your support. It’s folks like you who speak out, chip in, and support our work to hold Big Tech accountable.

While the fallout from Musk’s latest move still unfolds, one thing is clear: our information ecosystem, safety, and democracy cannot remain at the whim of unaccountable billionaires – whether it’s Elon Musk or anyone else.

We will keep fighting to ensure that Twitter and other social media platforms continue to uphold and strengthen safeguards to mitigate hate, harassment, and harmful disinformation.

Onwards,
