SB 106 & its 5 Constitutional Amendments
|
Senate Bill 106 began as one constitutional amendment to reform the process of electing a Lieutenant Governor, but it now includes four additional amendments added in the 111th hour by the majority party that propose:
1. There would be no constitutional right to abortion in Pennsylvania.
2. The Governor’s executive branch of government may not exercise its full authority to veto legislation or issue executive orders when necessary.
3. Voters must present a valid identification every time they vote in an election.
4. The elected office of PA Auditor General would audit elections and election results, as opposed to the PA Department of State, a nonpolitical office.
These amendments would deny access to vital health care for Pennsylvanians, create an overreach of legislative power, blatant disenfranchisement, and degrade election integrity in Pennsylvania.
SB 106 was fiercely debated last Thursday night in the Senate and on Friday night in the House with Democrats, myself included, vehemently opposed to this egregious bill. In the majority,
Republicans passed SB 106. These newly proposed PA constitutional amendments must pass through both legislative chambers again next session before they could be presented as ballot questions to voters. Using the constitutional amendment process in Pennsylvania to bypass the Governor’s approval or veto of bills is terrible government practice that often deceives voters and fuels partisanship.
