John — The science is becoming clearer by the day: using natural gas has a major impact on our health. Recent research has shown yet another way that residential natural gas is dangerous.
Researchers in a new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found 21 different hazardous pollutants mixed in with the natural gas that is piped into homes. These pollutants are all known or suspected to cause cancer by the EPA.
Further, the study also showed that our homes might be experiencing more natural gas leaks than we realize, which when put together with the discovery of these carcinogens, makes for a frightening cocktail.
Natural gas is typically odorless on its own, so odorants are supposed to be added in order for leaks to be easily detected. The researchers found that these odorants are not consistently present in the natural gas that reaches homes though, meaning that far more leaks could be happening undetected.
This is a public health emergency happening under our noses, and it’s growing worse every time we flip on our stoves. Natural gas (or should we say “fossil gas”) simply needs to go.
SEEC members have been on the forefront of the fight to decarbonize our homes and replace fossil gas appliances with green solutions. They are using every possible avenue to steer us away from fossil gas usage and daily exposure to dangerous pollutants. But to continue on in this fight, they need your support. Too many of our SEEC members are at risk of losing their seats. If they go, so do our chances of decarbonizing our homes and protecting us from carcinogenic chemicals.
