John,
Last week, the Commonwealth’s GOP-led state legislature voted to start the process of stripping away voting and abortion rights through constitutional amendment ballot questions. Senate Bill 106 would restrict the right to abortion in addition to requiring voter I.D. if passed out of the state House and Senate. SB 106 will need to pass one more time, in the next session for it to appear as a ballot question as early as the May 2023 Primary Election. They say they’re doing this to leave the decision up to the voters. But notably, they neglected to do the same when the voters decided the outcome in the 2020 election.
Even if these amendments get voted down, PA’s Constitution won’t explicitly protect the right to an abortion, or to vote without the additional barriers they want to enact in our Constitution.
John, we declare that if the legislature truly wants to “return the power to the people,” then they must allow the people to vote in favor of protecting our rights, not just against taking them away. Will you sign our petition calling on them to do that right now? We’re hoping for at least 1,000 signatures by midnight to build up momentum.
