AFSCME Family,
This week is our union's 45th International Convention. Hours before delegates from across the nation arrived in Philadelphia, we learned that we had lost a legend: AFSCME President Emeritus Gerald W. McEntee.
Jerry was a visionary leader and one of the most fearless, ferocious advocates working people have ever had. From the convention floor, leaders spoke of Jerry's political prowess, organizing success and plainspoken bluntness. And throughout the hall, members could be overheard telling one another their favorite Jerry stories, sharing tears and laughter alike.
Now, we want to invite all of you to share your memories. By clicking here, you can upload a photo or type out a thought, big or small. These memories will be a balm to Jerry's family — and a reminder to all of us of the work we must carry on.
Both Jerry's family and AFSCME will continue to celebrate his life in the days ahead. Of note, we will honor his work by growing the Gerald W. McEntee Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an AFSCME member for use towards higher education. Please join us in sustaining this important scholarship.
Jerry McEntee had the "heart of a lion," as President Bill Clinton once said. But he also believed — as do I — that AFSCME's members are the heart of our union. It's up to all of us to build on his legacy.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders
AFSCME President
