John, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and I am outraged.
This ruling makes women second-class citizens in our country, withholding the right to make our own decisions about our lives and our bodies.
I know firsthand what it’s like to make difficult choices and limited options.
While in the Army and serving as a company commander in Korea, I went to the medical unit, thinking I had a stomach flu. Pregnancy never even crossed my mind - but the doctor conducted a test anyway. It was positive.
But I wasn’t the first person the doctor told. The doctor had already informed my commanding officer that I was no longer combat-ready. I was stripped of command, and my pregnancy was public knowledge. I was advised to resign.
Overall, I was lucky. I had a partner, who is now my husband Kevin, and I knew would be there for me. We decided to begin a family. Kevin and I made the best of our limited options. We married, and I resigned my commission.
I didn’t speak of the events again because of the shame involved. From the moment I decided to become a mother, my children’s lives became more important than my own. I know that this choice is life-changing and takes total commitment.
John, everyone should be able to make the decision if, when, and how to become a parent. I’m infuriated that right now, in states all across this country, including Wisconsin, pregnant women don’t have a choice.
Patients who want to seek abortion care but can’t afford it, must travel out of our state. Some patients facing medical complications don’t have time to wait. The Supreme Court’s decision is already having unbearable consequences. Choice is a fundamental right and this decision is a breakdown in our democracy.
In every election from now on, the right to legal, accessible reproductive care is on the ballot. I will do everything in my power to restore abortion rights at the federal level, so women in Wisconsin and in every state are assured of their most basic rights.
To be able to protect our rights in Congress, I need your support now. We’re about halfway through July but in danger of falling short of our last monthly fundraising goal before the August primary. I need your support if we’re going to win. I’m personally asking if you’d be able to make your first contribution of $5 to keep our campaign going strong through the primary and beyond.
