Justice Delayed, but Finally Delivered
An American patriot who was unjustly deported six years ago was welcomed home last week. Ivan Ocon, a brave Army veteran, won the right to return to the United States with the support of a powerful network of organizations, including the AFL-CIO; the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO (UVC); the Deported Veterans Support House; and Yale Law School’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic. He was sworn in last Thursday as a U.S. citizen in a ceremony held in El Paso, Texas. “This is an emotional day, and I’m so grateful to be reunited with my family," said Ocon. "This country is my home, and I will continue to fight to make sure that other veterans like me get the justice they deserve.” “Justice has finally been served for Ivan and his family, and we look forward to helping more of our deported veterans return home where they belong,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. Will Attig, executive director of the UVC, said “This win is just the beginning in our long fight to bring deported veterans home and ensure that they are no longer casualties of unjust immigration policies that target, rather than protect, working families."

With just six days left before next Tuesday's Maryland Primary Election, the labor movement continues to work to get out the labor vote for Tom Perez and county endorsed candidates, including at a phonebank tonight, and at a rally and door-knock canvass this Saturday. “Remember, the union with the highest turnout will be treated to a Poolside Happy Hour sponsored by the Metro Washington’s very own President Dyana Forester!” said MWC Political Director Dejah Desiree Williams. Jerry McEntee, longtime AFSCME leader, dies at 87
Gerald W. McEntee, the longtime president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO), who led the union to historic growth, positioning it as a voice for working people and a force to be reckoned with in the nation’s civil rights movement, and who went toe to toe with U.S. presidents in defense of public services, passed away Sunday at his home in Naples, Florida. He was 87. So much of a giant in the labor movement and progressive politics was McEntee that former President Bill Clinton once remarked “he had the heart of a lion,” and that if Clinton was ever in a foxhole, McEntee was the person he wanted with him, while former President Barack Obama noted that McEntee “built AFSCME into such an important force for change.” Read more here.

Labor In The News: UFCW 400’s Mark Federici
“What I learned most about our members during COVID are actually things that I already knew,” UFCW 400 president Mark Federici told the Food Trade News. “Their unquestioned dedication and professionalism, as well as the courage it took for them to show up to work day in and day out, is remarkable. Our members in all industries showed an esprit de corps for their communities, customers and coworkers. That is nothing short of extraordinary. Absolutely astounding! We should all be in awe. We should never forget.” Read more here.

Union Voice/Readers Write: Labor on the airwaves
“Sitting in the car on Shirley Highway each weekday morning listening to WTOP telling me where the latest traffic problem is, my ears have picked a new and wonderful sound,” writes Dan Duncan. “Union ads! Depending on the time, our sisters and brothers from Steamfitters 602, IBEW 26, IUEC 10 and IUOE 77 are telling the DMV that unions have built and are building this area. Sure relieves the tedium of being stuck on the 14th Street bridge!” Duncan is Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO.
