John, ICYMI: June was an eventful month for redistricting and American democracy. Let’s talk about what has happened:
- On June 24, the Supreme Court overturned Roe, reversing more than 50 years of precedent and federal protections for abortion rights. 61% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
- On June 28, the Supreme Court ruled that Louisiana could continue to use a congressional map that a federal court had found to violate the VRA. Although a third of the population in Louisiana is Black, only one out of six districts will be majority Black.
- On June 30, the Supreme Court announced that it will hear Moore v. Harper, a case in which the Republicans argue that state legislatures should have almost sole control over congressional redistricting. If the Republicans are to succeed, redistricting will be on the ballot this fall.
There’s no easy way to put this -- June was a damning month for our democracy and the future of fair redistricting efforts. A court of unelected justices gutted reproductive rights, slashed fair congressional maps, and now moves to overhaul the entire redistricting process.
So often have we heard that our democracy is in jeopardy. But these Republican threats will not stop and neither will we. Can we count on you to support our efforts?

With all of these horrible past decisions, it’s time to look to the future. In the fall, the Supreme Court will hear
Moore, the independent state legislature theory case. A case designed to restrict independent commissions and the will of the people in the redistricting process. Despite the challenges ahead, we are hopeful. Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, will be arguing to protect fair redistricting processes and the future of our democracy.
Winning this case means everything to the fair map movement.
At All On The Line, we have been fighting for years to engage more of the public in redistricting, to create fair and inclusive maps, and to support the use of independent commissions. This is our fight, and we will take the lead.
