I believe in the American Dream because I LIVED IT.
This is a country that allowed me, the son of a single mom who raised her two Black sons in the South, to become a U.S. Senator representing the home of the Civil War.
Where else on Earth is that possible?
I refuse to buy into the "burn it all down" mentality dominating our current culture and discourse.
That isn’t my story and that isn’t the story of America.
My story, like the story of many Americans, is one of challenges and opportunities, and of pain turned into purpose.
When I was young, my grandparents took my mom, my brother, and me into their home when my parents split up. My mom worked long and hard hours each and every day to put food on the table.

I had dreams of playing for the Dallas Cowboys when I was older. It was simple: football was my ticket out, and a chance to give back to my mom for all the love and support she showed me.
But then, because life often does not go the way we expect, my dream was shattered.
I fell asleep behind the wheel of her old AMC Gremlin and flipped it. I nearly died in the wreck but as you might have guessed - my story didn’t end there.
With the help of some important mentors and the grace of God, I was able to have a successful career in sales and insurance. Shortly after that, I ran for political office in the Charleston area – as a Republican – and my journey as a public servant began.
Along the way, I became the first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate from a Southern state in modern history.

My mission in the Senate from Day 1 has been to show that every American can achieve their own American Dream when given an equal opportunity, and when the government gets out of their way to let them do it.
I believe that we are all created in the image of God with an infinite capacity to overcome the challenges set before us no matter the height of the obstacles.
