John,
Even after a judge ordered Sen. Lindsey Graham (MAGA Republican – SC) to comply with a subpoena and testify before the Georgia grand jury investigating Trump’s attempted overturning of the election in Georgia, Lindsey refuses to cooperate.
In fact, he had the gall to utter this error-ridden sentence on Fox News Radio:
"If we open up county prosecutors being able to call every member of the Senate based on some investigation they think is good for the country, we'll ruin the place."
Lindsey Graham thinks he is above the law. Donate to help us keep the pressure on Republicans who try to outrun justice >> secure.actblue.com/donate/HJGA-04-Email-July2022-FR-wbw?refcode=E16997-20220712-WBWLindseyGraham-SL1pt-GOP-RegTemplate-GA-NA&amount=10
Let’s take his statement apart piece by piece, shall we?
“If we open up county prosecutors…”
Lindsey is talking about District Attorney Fani Willis, and he’s trying to minimize her importance by calling her a county prosecutor, a term meant to evoke images of a small gig at the courthouse next to the local sheriff’s office.
We’d like to remind Sen. Graham that Ms. Willis oversees a jurisdiction with more than seven times the population of the largest city in his state.
“...being able to call…”
Ms. Willis didn’t call Lindsey Graham. She didn’t do anything to him – the grand jury she impanelled did. And they didn’t “call” him; they subpoenaed him. There’s a difference.
Lindsey Graham called Brad Raffensperger to ask him about discarding mail-in ballots.
A grand jury subpoenaed Lindsey Graham because of his role in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Big difference.
“...every member of the Senate…”
They didn’t subpoena (or even “call”) “every member of the Senate” – just the one who dialed in from out-of-state trying to unlawfully overturn the will of Georgia voters.
“...based on some investigation they think is good for the country…”
Call us old fashioned, but upholding the integrity of our democracy and safeguarding the peaceful transfer of power is absolutely “good for the country.” That shouldn’t even be in dispute.
“...we’ll ruin the place.”
No. The way we “ruin the place” is by allowing Senators to abuse their power in order to shield themselves from accountability.
Lindsey Graham is proposing that no Senator can be held legally responsible for their actions. This man has chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, and somehow, he literally thinks he is above the law.
