Can you believe that John Eastman, who wrote the plan for Trump's coup in 2020, still has his law license?!
The congressional Jan. 6 committee presented evidence showing that Eastman KNEW his legal arguments were phony while he was shilling them. He even asked Trump for a presidential pardon to cover his tracks.1
That's right: Trump and Eastman spread lies about the 2020 election in an attempted coup even though they knew his plan was a sham. Eastman sent Trump the notorious memo outlining how he could overrule voters’ will, cling to power, and pretend it was legal.2 And Trump incited a white supremacist-led insurrection based on these lies. They were trying to suppress and erase the votes of Black and brown voters who were part of a multigenerational, multiracial coalition of people who voted Trump out of office.
And the scary part is that they're likely not going to give up—Trump and his allies are already preparing for another coup in 2024 by trying to place his loyalists in roles overseeing the running of elections in key battleground states. That's why we must demand accountability for Eastman's actions.

Eastman’s actions undermining our Constitution and democracy show he is fundamentally unfit for membership in the legal profession. He has flagrantly violated some of the most basic ethics rules governing the legal profession. The California Bar should undertake disbarment proceedings against Eastman and send the message that the legal profession stands firmly in defense of our democratic institutions.
Our pressure can help force action. The California bar announced this spring that they were conducting a review of Eastman's law license.3 It was a rare public announcement for them. And he was just subpoenaed by the special grand jury in Georgia investigating criminal charges for Trump's blatantly illegal call pressuring the Georgia secretary of state to "find" enough votes to flip the state to Trump.4
But it's not enough. Every day that Eastman and those like him evade consequences deepens the threat to our democracy. Prominent California lawyers are already calling for speeding up action against Eastman, just like the New York bar did against lying Rudy Giuliani.
