U.S. Army in Retreat; One Complaint Nixes Bible Verses on Dog Tags

By: Bruce Hausknecht

One complaint was all it took to end a two-decade history of religious-themed dog tags for our troops. It’s not sitting well with religious liberty advocates and has even caught the attention of a U.S. Congressman.

Shields of Strength (SoS) is a private business with a big faith emphasis. Its products include everything from clothing to jewelry, but with a Christian theme. For two decades now, SoS has produced, with the U.S. Army’s permission and trademark license, dog tag replicas with uplifting sayings and Bible verses. SoS has produced over four million of the dog tags and has donated hundreds of thousands of them to Department of Defense (DoD) units and individual service members, reaching an estimated 90% of the operational units within DoD.

Recently the DoD demanded that SoS remove all Bible verses from its products that take advantage of a military trademark license. Why? Because DoD received one complaint from an atheist group, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). The group warned of litigation against the military if the Bible verse dog tags were allowed to continue, saying it “poisons the constitutionally mandated separation of Church and State.”

The army may have retreated, but SoS has not.

Sportscaster Details How College Football Star J.K. Dobbins’ Mother Chose Life After Almost Aborting Him
By: Zachary Mettler

During a live airing of the game, Sportscaster Gus Johnson told the amazing story behind J.K. Dobbins’ birth. Dobbins is a junior football star at Ohio State University. Johnson’s focus on Dobbins was sparked by his record-setting game in which Dobbins ran 211 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns.

“J.K. Dobbins’ mom Mya, became pregnant when she was 18-years old, she went to the doctor because she was thinking about aborting the baby. But she changed her mind. That baby turned out to be that young man, J.K. Dobbins who she calls her miracle baby,” Johnson informed viewers.

Department of Justice Sides with Maryland Christian School Excluded from State Scholarship Program
By: Bruce Hausknecht

When you’re a small Christian school standing up against the unfair actions of the Maryland state government, it’s nice to have a friend in the form of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) enter the fray on your behalf.

Bethel Christian Academy, as you may recall, has taken Maryland to court after being excluded from a taxpayer-funded scholarship program benefitting low-income families who are entitled to use those funds to attend private schools, including religious ones like Bethel. After the school participated in the scholarship program for several years, its eligibility was revoked, and the state demanded a refund of over $100,000 from the church-run school for funds previously awarded to students who used them to attend Bethel.

Chick-fil-A’s Charitable Giving and Leftist Activists
By: Jeff Johnston

Many of us were disappointed by the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s recent announcement that it was no longer donating to Christian organizations like the Salvation Army, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Paul Anderson Youth Home. The foundation said it was changing its giving policies to a more “focused giving approach” and the foundation would support “a smaller number of organizations working exclusively in the areas of education, homelessness and hunger.”

For years, Chick-fil-A has been attacked for donating to Christian organizations. Activists have objected to their support of the biblical definition of marriage and sexuality:  God created humans male and female in His image, and marriage is the lifelong union of a husband and wife.

CDC Abortion Report – Good and Bad News for America
By: Brittany Raymer

Every year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) releases the Abortion Surveillance report. It details, as much as possible, what abortion currently looks like in the United States (although the data is three years old). While there is a lot of good news out of the CDC’s study, there are many concerning trends as well. Last week, The Daily Citizen detailed what the report meant for the future of Planned Parenthood, but here are some of the other details from the report and what it means for Americans and the pro-life cause.

Overall, abortion numbers are down by 24% since 2005, falling to 623,471 in 2016 (minus reporting from California, Maryland, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia). That’s great news for pro-life supporters. Some of this could be the result of a natural demographics shift in the United States as the birth rate has fallen to record lows, but it is nonetheless a positive development.
