I recently returned from Kenema, Sierra Leone, where I was on assignment at a pediatric hospital run by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
Our team is providing vital care for sick children, but that is not our only goal. We're also doing our very best to make Kenema a teaching hospital for nurses, midwives, and community health officers in the region to address the urgent shortage of local medical staff in a sustainable way.
Friend, will you support our goal? Sierra Leone has among the highest rates in the world of sickness and death among mothers and children under five. This is entirely preventable, but we need your help. Please consider making a gift toward our goal >>
When disaster strikes, MSF staff mobilize quickly to provide care where it’s needed most. But what happens after the situation stabilizes? How do we ensure patients continue to benefit from quality health services even after MSF teams have left?
Questions like this are what drove me and my colleagues to form the MSF Academy for Health Care, a two-year training program for local health workers designed to empower them with the skills they need to continue providing world class care for generations to come. You can support this vital work with a generous gift right now >>
Today, as our medical teams work to support local hospitals across the country, clinical mentors like Rebecca are providing hands-on training to the next generation of Sierra Leone’s medical workforce. This is a country where roughly 21 percent of the medical workforce died during the historic Ebola epidemic that began in 2014. This initiative has been especially important in rebuilding Sierra Leone’s local health system.
The MSF Academy for Health Care is just one example of how MSF works to tailor each project to the specific needs of its community. In fact, over 90 percent of our national staff members are recruited and trained locally.
To help ensure better health outcomes for people in Sierra Leone and around the world, we’re calling on 513 donors to step up and make a generous gift by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. 180 donors have already given—will you?
Thank you,
Dr. Daan Van Brusselen
