Congress must begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s abuses of power.
In an op-ed in the New York Times today, I laid out the case for Congress to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s behavior, based in part on Special Counsel Mueller’s testimony today, which made clear that President Trump has abused his power in several ways. This decision is one that CREW reached with great reluctance. This call for an impeachment inquiry is grounded in the solemn realization that as a nation, we have exhausted other avenues to achieve executive branch accountability.
Mueller has laid out the evidence and done his job, and now it’s time for Congress to carry out one of their key Constitutional roles as protector of the law. We can’t answer all the questions we have about Trump’s misconduct, but Congress can—and they must.
Now we’re asking you to email your member of Congress and ask them to call for an impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s behavior.
Three of Trump’s behaviors rise to the level that they require Congress to hold an impeachment inquiry: obstruction of the Mueller investigation, misuse of private office for public gain, and conspiracy to defraud campaign finance law. To call for an impeachment inquiry is not to prejudge the final outcome. However, the evidence is clear and convincing enough that Congress cannot afford to delay any longer.
If we are going to ensure that no person is truly above the law, there is no other option: Congress must begin an impeachment inquiry now.
Together, we can make it clear to Congress that they must act: email your member of Congress now in support of beginning an impeachment inquiry.
At CREW, we take our mission as a nonpartisan watchdog seriously. We cannot accept President Trump’s conduct or his evasion of accountability, and we cannot allow it to become a new normal. We must stand up for our democracy and the rule of law, and we call on Congress to do the same and take seriously their role as a check on executive abuses of power.
The future of our democracy depends on it.
