Dear UFE and RW friends,
Please take a moment to check out this exciting new initiative from
our partners at TURN/EWDi. We hope you will join
their launch event this Thursday, July 14th!
Best,
Mike Lapham Responsible Wealth/UFE
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Growing wealth inequality and a rigged economy affect every issue
you and I care about. Bring your (virtual) pitchforks on Bastille
Day, July
14 (11am Pacific; 2pm Eastern), and learn about two brand
new efforts – the TURN (Tax the Ultra Rich Now!)
Campaign and the Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute
(EWDi).
The TURN Campaign is elevating the issue
of taxes in five key battleground states this election cycle.
TURN is a coalition led by Americans for Tax Fairness, Working
America, Health Care for America Now, and Working Families Party,
together with state organization leaders in five target states:
Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The
campaign includes message testing, door knocking, and robust
social media, particularly among youth and communities of
color. This diverse, grassroots effort represents a fresh
approach in the fight for a just tax system and the effort to mobilize
underrepresented voters.
The Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute
(EWDi) will dig deep into all things related to the
ultra-rich, the wealthiest 0.1% of our society, and promote a cure for
this disorder that affects all of us. We’ll highlight the excessive
wealth problems, challenge so-called meritocracy, and explore what it
means to have “enough”, so that we change the societal narrative about
the ultra-rich and move toward an economy of shared prosperity and
racial justice. EWDi is guided by a 9-person Board of Directors,
including Darrick Hamilton (University Professor and Director of the
Institute for the Study of Race, Stratification and Political Economy
at The New School), Nancy MacLean (Professor of History and Public
Policy at Duke University), and Vini Bhansali (Executive Director of
the Solidaire Network).

Choosing Bastille Day is intentional – as that’s
when French peasants stormed the Bastille 233 years ago, launching the
French Revolution against a ruling elite they saw as oppressive and
out of touch. And we are honored to have as our guest speaker the
distinguished French economist Gabriel Zucman,
director of the Stone Center on Wealth and Income Inequality at UC
Berkeley. Also presenting will be state leaders, reporting on how
taxing the ultra-rich looks from the “field”.
So please join
us for this important launch event. I look forward to
seeing you then.
