When I was deciding what to do with my life, joining the U.S. Army was an
easy choice.
That isn’t to say the journey wasn’t difficult. Being a Green Beret tested me
physically and mentally more than anything I’d ever experienced.

But I knew that without warriors who were willing to put their life on the
line to serve, the freedoms that we love would be ripped out from under us.
I’m proud to say I’ve spent over two decades of my life defending democracy
both as a U.S. Army Green Beret and as a member of Congress, but my work is far
from over.

When I look back on my career, I don’t have any regrets, John.
There were definitely sacrifices made - time away from my family, living
abroad without the comforts of home, and the stress that comes with combat can
wear you down.
But all of these struggles are worth it to be able to live in the freest
nation on Earth.
I’m not done working for America, and I know you aren’t either.
