Monday Nature Mystery
 

Last week’s mystery was a real puzzler! No one was able to guess correctly. The answer is…drumrollCommon Raven (Corvus corax)!

According to Cornell Lab’s All About Birds, the Common Raven is an acrobatic flier, often doing rolls and somersaults in the air. One bird was seen flying upside down for more than a half-mile. Their feathers, while appearing black, actually have a blue iridescence that is visible in the right light. The complexity of color within the bird world is fascinating! A special reminder, you can learn more about color and iridescence by attending this Thursday’s class, “How Do Birds Get Their Colors, with Ivan Phillipsen (The Science of Birds).” You can register here
