Friend, Today, President Biden commemorated the passage of a historic piece of legislation aimed at addressing gun violence in America. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act will encourage states to implement Extreme Risk Protection Orders, close the dating partner loophole, and expand background check information to include juvenile offenses for all purchasers under the age of 21. You can read our full statement concerning the bill here and see our Tweet regarding the statement here. We were happy to attend this event commemorating the passage of the first gun violence prevention bill to pass Congress in the last 20+ years. Check out our Facebook Album With Pics From the Event! We are grateful for this first step toward stopping gun violence. However, we can and should do much more. From banning assault weapons to changing the purchase age of these weapons, we know that common-sense gun violence policies reduce gun violence overall. We know requiring states to implement Extreme Risk Protection Orders helps address mass violence and suicides committed by firearm. Locally, we must update Nevada’s preemption law so local communities can decide what gun violence prevention policies work best for them. It’s time for policymakers to stop protecting the gun lobby and start listening to their constituents. It is crucial we continue building on the momentum from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act by reaching out to legislators and encouraging them to support gun violence prevention policies during the next Nevada Legislative Session in 2023. We can and will continue pushing policies to address gun violence regardless of the opposition from the gun lobby & their allies. We also encourage you to get involved with our Storybank if you or someone you know has been impacted by gun violence. We hope to share stories of impacted individuals as we believe they are the best messengers for change. Onward, |
