It doesn’t stop, John.
SCOTUS just announced that it will hear Moore v. Harper, a case that threatens to end democracy as we know it. And that’s not an exaggeration.
Here’s what you need to know: Moore v. Harper could reinstate the extremely, illegally gerrymandered congressional maps that North Carolina’s highest court threw out. The Republicans aren’t just arguing that their awful maps were legal, they are arguing that our state Supreme Court had NO authority to strike them down.
That means our state courts could lose power to strike down bad elections laws passed by the legislature and the Governor could lose power to veto them. It could even mean that state legislatures could seize the power to ignore the popular vote and send in their own slate of electors in the next presidential election. And if you think they wouldn’t do that, just listen to the January 6th Hearings. This is beyond the pale!
John, add your name now to our petition demanding that SCOTUS do their job and protect our rights and our democracy >>>
If the right-wing majority on SCOTUS sides with the North Carolina Republicans in this case:
- States could lose their ability to combat partisan gerrymandering
- Ballots could be thrown out for arbitrary reasons
- State courts could no longer protect our voting rights in federal elections
- States could pass laws that allow them to throw out the presidential electors chosen by the people and select their own
In states like North Carolina with a GOP-controlled legislature, this would be a disaster. Republican-controlled state legislatures could throw out the results of presidential elections they don’t like. It would give the Republican Party in these states unlimited control over election laws.
We cannot let this stand. We must act to make our voices heard. Sign our petition now to tell SCOTUS to defend our democracy instead of tearing it down >>>
Thank you for standing with me.
