ANNOUNCEMENTS

Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now Study Series Part 2

Thursday, July 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

As we face the reality that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating our constitutional right to an abortion, it’s time for us to take stock.

Join the DSA Los Angeles Political Education Committee for part 2 of our study series on Jenny Brown’s Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now.

At this event, we will engage in a structured discussion about Chapter II of Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now. And, in the process, learn how the women’s liberation movement of the 1960’s won abortion rights, putting together a road map for today’s organizers.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed – Part 4 – DSA-LA SFV Marxism Reading Group

Tuesday, July 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Please join us for our discussion of the final chapter of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire on Tuesday, July 12th.

A summary: “Pedagogy of the Oppressed develops a theory of education fitted to the needs of the disenfranchised and marginalized members of capitalist societies. Combining educational and political philosophy, the book offers an analysis of oppression and a theory of liberation. Freire believes that traditional education serves to support the dominance of the powerful within society and thereby maintain the powerful’s social, political, and economic status quo. To overcome the oppression endemic to an exploitative society, education must be remade to inspire and enable the oppressed in their struggle for liberation.”

A collaborative doc with the text we’ll be discussing, the audiobook version, and Zoom connection information will be provided. Please RSVP for access.

Labor Committee July General Meeting

Wednesday, July 13 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us on Wednesday, July 13th at 7:00 p.m. for our monthly Labor Committee meeting. We will be discussing workplace organizing, the labor movement, and opportunities for DSA members to organize and build worker power.

The core of DSA-LA’s labor work is our Labor Circles program. If you are interested in joining a Labor Circle or forming a new Circle, you can begin by filling out the Socialist Workplace Survey. The survey will help us map where we are in LA’s economy and identify where we have workplace, industry and union membership densities to organize around. Take a minute and fill out the Socialist Workplace Survey today!

We will be meeting at MacArthur Park near the Levitt Pavilion.

Masks are mandatory! If possible please test yourself before arriving at the event, we will also have on site-testing. Please bring water and any other items that you feel would make you comfortable while outside for the duration of the training.

“We Are Tenants” Proposed Convention Resolution Q&A

Thursday, July 14 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The Housing and Homelessness Committee is sponsoring a Convention resolution focused on tenant union organizing and Street Watch:

"With the recent launch of the Emergency Tenant Organizing Committee (ETOC) project through the national DSA Housing Justice Commission (HJC), DSA-LA has a terrific opportunity to plug in and train/coordinate local members in unionizing with their neighbors where they live! Our fight for tenant power and against the criminalization of poverty and homelessness requires us to organize as tenants. Join our Q&A event to learn more about this resolution and what it would mean for tenant organizing to become a chapter priority."
