Dear John,

Today is a day for celebration, barbecue, and fireworks. But it’s also a day for reflection and careful consideration of the cornerstone principles that guided the Founding Fathers of America--the principles that are baked into our constitution and our way of life: freedom and equality for all.

In our centuries-old history, our country hasn’t always lived up to these principles equally for every American. But even in America’s darkest hours, our ideals have persisted, and guided generations of Americans in seeking a better future. That spirit has managed to live on in the hearts of those who advocated, marched, and fought for freedom and equality.

On this day, and every day, may we honor those Americans who have worked to create a freer, more equal society for every woman, man, and child who call this country home. May we remember the courageous Americans who were inspired by these principles, those who served to stand up for them, and those who ultimately gave their lives to protect them. Let’s honor them by rededicating our own actions to these principles, and never stop striving to make sure every American--regardless of the color of their skin, their zip code, or their income--is free and equal.

My hope is that on this special day, each of us will have the opportunity to celebrate with our loved ones and reflect on the foundational principles that bring us all together.

All my best,
Jeff
