As the Fall semester rapidly approaches, it is crucial that our students and teachers have everything they need to succeed. This week, I joined Alpine ISD’s Superintendent, Dr. Michelle Rinehart, along with several school board members and principals, to discuss ways I can help them prepare for the upcoming academic year. They led me on a tour of the High School to show the progress of summertime renovations that are underway. I look forward to helping all schools in my district create a safe learning environment for students and staff.

Met With the Big Bend Border Patrol and Police Department in Marfa
I started off Wednesday morning in Marfa with Chief Patrol Agent, Sean L. McGoffin, and several Border Patrol agents in the Big Bend Sector. Remote areas like these are experiencing record rates of smuggling and drug trafficking. Open borders have invited the cartels into our own backyards, so it is essential that we strengthen our response against their activities. I am appreciative of the Border Patrol and their daily commitment to keeping America safe.
On Wednesday afternoon, I also had the pleasure of meeting with Marfa Police Chief Estevan Marquez and several of his officers to discuss how I can support their law enforcement operations in Congress. These brave men and women do incredible work each day to protect West Texas communities.

Response to the Border Crisis
Last week, the deadliest human smuggling incident in U.S. history occurred right in San Antonio. A total of 73 migrants were abandoned by ruthless smugglers, who locked them in 102-degree metal containers to die. This is not an isolated incident, and it will only continue if we do not stop incentivizing people to make this deadly trip to our southern border. High-speed chases, cut water lines, property trespassing, smuggling, and trafficking are daily occurrences that put both American and migrant lives in danger every day. I penned an op-ed with Fox News to discuss solutions to this crisis.
