Enjoy the summer... but please take care of yourself and others

hot weather

It?s certainly hot out there today! We?ve seen temperatures rising over the last few days and the warmer weather is going to last for the rest of this week. While it is lovely to bask in the sunshine, we have to take care of ourselves and others in the heat. Please remember when you are out and about:

* Stay in the midday shade
* Drink fluids and avoid excess alcohol
* Wear sunscreen
* Don?t be tempted to cool off in rivers and open water
* Don?t walk dogs in the heat, unless early morning

Also, look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions. When you?re at home, you should close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors. Dress appropriately for the weather and slow down when it is hot.

You can get more information about sun safety on the NHS website here [ [link removed] ].

July Full Council

Council House

Full council has met today to discuss numerous items. A report was raised by Deputy Leader Adele Williams concerning the Government?s letter that they are minded to install commissioners. On Thursday, Nottingham City Council submitted our letter of representation to the Government, setting out our beliefs that, while we will work with commissioners, we are disappointed that the Government feels they are required, as we had been working cooperatively with the Improvement and Assurance Board to make necessary changes and improvements.

Our new three-year Crime and Drugs Partnership Plan was also raised during the council meeting, setting out our commitment to a multi-agency response to help tackle the issues of Anti-Social Behaviour and crime affecting city residents.

A new vision to join-up health and social care in Nottingham

ics

Full Council today also approved plans to better join up the way health and care services are delivered in our city. The City Council agreed that we should formally be part of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) with the NHS. This new partnership will be better placed to make decisions on how best to improve the care our citizens receive.

The move is part of a series of changes to the health system. The new NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board was established on 1 July, to bring together all of the Clinical Commissioning Groups locally as part of an Integrated Care System.

The council is working with the Integrated Care Board, Nottinghamshire County Council and independent and third sector providers to make sure that decisions about how to spend the NHS budget will be jointly made by doctors, nurses and managers from the NHS and local councils.

We proved during the Covid-19 pandemic that our citizens benefit from better care when local authorities and the NHS work closely together. I believe we can build on this strong foundation to create more joined-up services that will better meet the needs of our local population.

Covid: we still need to take care

Living with covid

I, myself, had to miss Full Council today as I have recently tested positive for Covid. Having felt unwell, I took a test as it is still the responsible course of action to take. It is frustrating having to miss important meetings such as Full Council due to self-isolating, but if we are to avoid another wave it is vital that we take of each other and ourselves.

The everyday things you can continue to do are to let in fresh air if meeting others indoors, practise good hygiene such as hand-washing and covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a face covering if you choose to.

Getting vaccinated is still the most important thing we can all do. It?s not too late to get vaccinated, whether it?s your first, second or booster dose. You can book your jab online through the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine [ [link removed] ].

Nottingham organisations are supporting Nottingham CN2028

cn28

If we are to meet our carbon neutral by 2028 target, then city-wide action will be needed and it?s really encouraging to see that many local organisations have already started on their journey towards a sustainable future. Last week, I joined City Council Chief Executive Mel Barrett in planting a tree at a special Environment Day being held by Experian, one of Nottingham?s major employers.

The company has re-shaped its city base, as part of making it one of three regional hubs in the UK, creating new eco spaces at the hub including a kitchen garden, EV charging, bio-diverse landscaping, bee hives and a nature trail supporting the carbon neutral ambitions of both the company and the city.

It is fantastic to see Nottingham organisations being innovative and lowering their carbon footprint.
