Dear John,
Last week, an unelected commission in New York state officially announced new ballot qualification rules designed to weaken progressives and eliminate minor parties in the state. And the worst part is this attack is specifically designed to crush the Working Families Party and the work we do. Here’s how:
-
The commission's work was led by Jay Jacobs — Governor Andrew Cuomo’s hand-picked state Democratic Party chair and right-hand man,1
-
According to Politico, Andrew Cuomo has been telling close friends and associates for months that he wants to destroy the WFP,2
-
Cuomo also has a long history of tampering with "independent" commissions like these,3
-
It even turns out that former Cuomo aides helped write the report.4
It’s abundantly clear: Cuomo and the party leadership he controls is trying to punish us for the progressive victories we’ve achieved these last two decades. It's the type of pushback we're seeing across the country in places where WFP is a threat to the status quo. And if we don’t fight back right now, we’re at risk of being seriously hamstrung heading into one of the most crucial election years of our lifetimes.
Can you make an emergency $3 donation today to help us fight back? We need to send a message that Cuomo’s attempts to take us down in 2020 won’t work.

For years, Andrew Cuomo has been threatened by the strength of our movement.
Together, we defeated his allies, the turncoat "Democrats" of the IDC in the state Senate last year, ushering in dynamic new progressive leadership in New York state.
And we helped deliver transformational victories like a $15 minimum wage, paid family leave, landmark climate legislation, immigrant rights, rent protections, criminal justice reforms, and more — all policies that Cuomo opposed until WFP and the progressive movement forced his hand.
That’s why he and his crew are making this move right now.
If the proposals hold up in court, it would turn New York into one of the most hostile states in America to minor parties, and take direct aim our ability to support visionary candidates and run them on the WFP ballot line.
We can’t let that happen. Show your support for WFP today with a donation of any amount. We need to pull out all the stops in this fight if we’re going to win and continue the fight for progressive change in 2020.
Next year, we will bring the full power of the WFP and our allies to bear in challenging those who block progressive change and electing the next generation of progressive leaders — including in Democratic primaries.
We will build the biggest WFP GOTV operation yet to meet any new thresholds and elect progressives from the top of the ballot on down.
And, together, we will win.
In solidarity,
The entire team at WFP
