** Ambitious Plan Reimagines Transportation
------------------------------------------------------------
Reduced Reliance on Automobiles to Reduce Traffic, Energy Costs and Climate Damage
Charlotte City Council has adopted a Strategic Mobility Plan ([link removed]) to reduce Charlotte’s dependence on cars and promote travel by foot, bicycle or public transit. The plan's goals will also increase social equity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This is a critical step in implementing sustainable neighborhoods and becoming a low-carbon city to achieve our climate goals. It also helps us eliminate traffic fatalities and crashes that have taken so many lives.
Currently, over 76% of Charlotte commuters use single-occupancy vehicles to get to and from work. The plan’s goal for 2040 is that living and working in Charlotte will not require transportation by car and reduce auto commutes by 50%.
Transportation access is a strong indicator of job accessibility and economic mobility. It may 20 years to change current culture that relies so heavily on automobiles. However, progress is already underway with improvements of public transit, bike and pedestrian networks and a framework to make our streets and roadways more efficient.
I am excited about Charlotte's future and very much want to continue the work I have started as your At-Large City Councilwoman. I humbly ask for your vote in the upcoming municipal general election on July 26. Early voting ([link removed]) is underway now!
Sincerely,
Dimple Ajmera
