Dear John,

TEN BILLION, FOUR-HUNDRED-AND-THIRTY-ONE-MILLION.

That's where the United Nations sees our human population peaking at in
2086 according to its latest projections released today: World Population
Day.

That's NEARLY 2.5 BILLION PEOPLE MORE THAN ARE ON OUR PLANET TODAY, and
more than five times the size of our population when Population Matters'
patron Sir David Attenborough was born in 1926.

The good news is that this is the first time in 20 years the UN has
projected that our population is most likely to stop growing this century -
albeit at the very end. The bending down of the population curve is a
victory that means better lives for a greater proportion of people.

BUT THE CONVERSATION IS FAR FROM OVER.

Join us today! [3]

It's 2022 and POVERTY AND FOOD INSECURITY ARE GROWING again, globally about
HALF OF ALL PREGNANCIES ARE UNINTENDED, more women have an UNMET NEED FOR
MODERN CONTRACEPTION than ever before, and the UN's Sustainable Development
Goals for 2030 are simply not on track to be met.

Continued population growth over the next 60 years is A RED FLAG FOR
INJUSTICE AND HUMAN SUFFERING. It persists where people are poor, where
infant mortality remains high, where too few children finish school and
where women cannot freely access and use modern contraception.

The fact that our population won't peak sooner than 2086 shows that WE HAVE
NOT DONE ENOUGH TO ADDRESS GLOBAL INJUSTICE AND SUFFERING.

WHAT CAN I DO?

At Population Matters we talk about population every day. We lead the
conversation about the impact continued population growth has on people's
lives, the other species we share our planet with, climate change, resource
use and deforestation - to name just a few. BUT WE CAN'T KEEP TALKING
WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Population Matters is a charity funded solely by donations and charitable
grants so to keep the conversation going we need your support. If you are
able, PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US FROM AS LITTLE AS £2.50 PER MONTH (or
£30 per year) this World Population Day.

When it comes to population, the best chance for the best future for all of
us is bringing our population growth to an end as soon as we can. That will
not solve all our problems, but it will mean that everything else we do to
make our human world fairer - and protect the natural world - will be more
effective.

If you have any questions or would like more information about membership
please contact us.

Thank you very much for your continued support this World Population Day
and throughout the year,

Izi Clery
Head of Fundraising and Engagement

P.S. We know times are tough so if you can't commit to a regular gift,
please consider making a one-off donation [4] instead.
