Hi John,
With abortion access now left up to the states, patients face overwhelming hurdles, red tape, and exorbitant costs, even in states where it's
legal.
Let's break down exactly what people needing abortions are up against:
-
People paying out-of-pocket: The median cost of the procedure alone in the first trimester was $515, but can be up to $750 and over $1,000 in the second trimester.
-
Working parents: The cost of the procedure plus the costs of childcare, days off from work, and travel expenses can be upwards of $1,000.
-
People in rural communities: The cost of the procedure plus travel time for potentially multiple appointments and multiple days off work equals thousands of dollars in lost wages and gas or accommodations.
-
People in states with bounties: The cost of the procedure plus up to $10,000 in civil suits plus legal fees.
For a procedure that's routine and potentially life-saving, that's bullshit.
But we can do something about it by expanding access to abortion everywhere, in red and blue states alike.
Here are two things you can do to protect abortion rights:
First: People need abortions
now, and the best way to make sure they have access to them is by donating to the
National Network of Abortion Funds, groups working directly on the ground in local communities to get people the care they need.
Second: In blue and red states alike, we must
elect pro-choice, diverse young progressives to state and local office to ensure abortion remains accessible.
Take Illinois, Colorado, and Rhode Island. These state legislatures have enshrined the right to abortion in state law and increased funding for abortions. Cities in red states — like Austin, Texas — are deprioritizing police investigations of abortions and banning the use of city funding for information sharing, data collection, and surveillance related to reproductive health.
