A World Remade: The Geostrategic and Human Costs of the Ukraine War

On July 7th, Women In International Security (WIIS) and WIIS Germany held a virtual briefing featuring Dr. Victoria Vdovychenko (Associate Professor and Researcher at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University) and Dr. Liana Fix (Program Director for International Affairs at the Körber-Stiftung) on the situation in Ukraine. Experts spoke about the strategic implications of the war in Ukraine and gave a broader account of the impact on the Ukrainian citizenry amidst Russian disinformation efforts.

This month, WIIS has partnered with the Consortium to co-host a conversation on the book Read Dangerously: The Subversive Power of Literature in Troubled Times by Azar Nafisi.

Women For Future: The Mediterranean

On July 1st, Loredana Teodorescu, President of WIIS Italy, moderated the panel "Women's Foresight on Reinvented Leadership" at the Women For Future: The Mediterranean Conference. The panel discussed how to create the conditions for more women at the negotiating tables and feminist diplomacy.

WIIS Portugal: Perspectives on the War in Ukraine and NATO Enlargement

On July 5th, WIIS Portugal held an event featuring Satu Suikkari-Kleven, Ambassador of Finland to Portugal, and Sofia Moreira de Sousa, Head of the European Commission representation in Portugal. They discussed NATO enlargement, the war in Ukraine️, and the inclusion of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in the new Strategic Concept.

WIIS Brussels Voices Podcast: Women and Leadership: The Shape of the European Union, Past, Present, and Future?

There are eternal questions about the European Union: does it lead events or respond to them? Does it become weaker or stronger in crises? Is it weakened by consensus or strengthened by it? These questions and many others were also repeatedly posed about the Habsburg Empire, which lasted 600 years. To discuss the comparison as well as the broader situation of the EU, Ilana Bet-El (WIIS Brussels) welcomes Dr. Nathalie Tocci, Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali in Rome. Dr. Tocci is a former special advisor to the EU High Representative and a renowned specialist on EU foreign and security affairs. She was joined by Caroline de Gruyter, a journalist and writer on EU and international affairs and most recently an author of a book on the Habsburg empire and the EU.

The Global Transformations and Governance Challenges Programme at Leiden University will be hosting a digital workshop on January 26-27, 2023. This workshop will bring together scholars working on the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Participants will be required to present a conference paper related to the topic of ‘Localizing the WPS Agenda’.
