John,

Public lands in Nevada are under attack and need your help. Through a devastating amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) is attempting to give away 1 million acres of public land for bombing, mining and industrialization.

Tell your representative to oppose this land grab. [link removed]

Amodei’s amendment would give the U.S. Navy full or partial control of 750,000 acres of public land, including more than 300,000 acres to drop bombs.

It would let mining companies take over the public lands where they mine, exempting destructive activities from environmental protection. It would force the government to approve a massive 16.5-billion-gallon-per-year water suck, draining the remote Dixie Valley and possibly driving a rare toad extinct. It would sell off hundreds of thousands of acres of the people’s land to developers for sprawl and industrial uses. And it would affect a vital stopover for migratory birds: Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge.

The special places that would be sacrificed are home to a rich array of desert wildlife, including bighorn sheep, pronghorns, bald and golden eagles, and greater sage grouse.

This is a threat to the very integrity of U.S. public lands. If Rep. Amodei can give away 1 million acres of Nevada’s beautiful Great Basin through a sneaky amendment, your own favorite places could be next.

Ask your representative to stop the giveaway and industrialization of public lands by keeping this pernicious amendment out of the National Defense Authorization Act. [link removed]
