Mothers and children under five in Sierra Leone face some of the worst mortality rates in the world, Friend. To understand why, look at the country's recent history of escalating crises:
A long and deadly Ebola epidemic from 2014 to 2016 killed many medical staff in Sierra Leone. The country was still trying to recover, with dangerous shortages of doctors and nurses, when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. Now, with the support of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), local teams are working to rebuild its shattered health system—and that's where we need you.
With the support of our donors, MSF staff in Sierra Leone are doing everything they can to improve outcomes for our patients. We're partnering with local health providers to strengthen vital infrastructure at the Hangha hospital in Kenema district, for example, where we've built an emergency room, intensive care unit, and two general pediatric wards. There is also a therapeutic feeding center where malnourished children receive care. All these services are complemented by a central laboratory, X-ray, and blood bank.
But we know providing outside care is not enough to sustain the health system long-term. Our goal is to rebuild and grow the system locally.
Through the MSF Academy for Health Care initiative, our Kenema team is also recruiting and training the next generation of nurses, midwives, and community health officers to ensure communities have the health workers they need for years to come. So far, the Academy’s training programs in Kenema have enrolled 166 nurses and 58 community health officers.
