Friends,

Last Thursday I participated in a candidate forum hosted by the local chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Our campaign was VERY well received. Voters responded to our clear and confident progressive message, and we even knocked the corporate-funded incumbent off kilter. But that’s not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about the Republicans in this race.

The GOP candidates on the ballot for WA-02 are dangerous radicals. They spent the forum pumping up Trump’s predicted re-election campaign and spinning outrageous, Q-Anon soaked conspiracy theories. One of them even openly called for violence against Democrats.

We can’t afford to let any of these right-wing radicals onto the ballot in November – fortunately, in Washington, we don’t have to.

Our top-two primary means the two candidates who get the MOST votes in the primary go on to face one another in the general election, even if they’re from the same party.

The choice for WA-02 right now is between an honest discussion between two Democrats about the future and direction of our country, or giving a platform to reactionary right-wingers who are actively threatening our democracy. Will you help me reach the voters I need to get on the November ballot?

Having two Democrats on the ballot in November will help downballot races, too – and that’s crucial to maintaining our Democratic majority in the state legislature to protect our rights.

I talked about this at the Whatcom County Summer Picnic on Friday. Here’s a peek:

I was so alarmed by one of the Republican candidates at that forum, who said he wanted to see Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic Party leaders “in their graves,” that I reached out to the League of Women Voters’ staff to ask them NOT to release the video of the forum with those statements included.

They agreed with me that his language constituted a clear incitement to violence – a legitimate threat in the current political climate. They thanked me for reaching out and said they shared my concerns. And they assured me that not only would those comments be edited out if the video is released, but that they are working with their attorney to explore legal options.

Here’s the good news: We don’t have to give these violent extremists a platform on our ballot, folks. Washington’s top-two primary gives us a way to silence their violent, divisive rhetoric by making sure we defeat ALL the Republican candidates on August 2nd and secure one of the top two spots on the ballot for November.

We can sideline radical Republicans AND drive turnout to bolster the Democratic majority in the state legislature at the same time. But I need your help to get there.

We’ve knocked on well over 10,000 doors in this district, and we’re not slowing down. With five days left until ballots drop and people begin voting, I need all hands on deck. Can you pitch in $22 now to keep my team on the field?

Solidarity,

Jason
