Vox: “A new Supreme Court case is the biggest threat to US democracy since January 6”
John – It’s official. I’m alarmed.

First, in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, the Trump Supreme Court gave the states the power to decide whether an individual can terminate their pregnancy. In many places, that power will fall to Republican-gerrymandered state legislatures.

Now, it gets worse: SCOTUS is agreeing to hear Moore v. Harper, a case that they could use to give those same legislatures control over nearly every aspect of federal elections.

It’s all based on the radical ‘Independent State Legislature’ theory, a fringe idea that state legislatures should have near-total control over federal elections. At least, it was fringe until the Trump Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.

Here’s the deal: In states like North Carolina, state supreme courts stood in the way of unlawful Republican gerrymandering this year – and Republicans didn’t like that. So they brought this case to SCOTUS in the hope that the Court’s conservative justices would give them near-unlimited power to:

Gerrymander
Enact voter suppression policies
Refuse to certify valid election results
Completely undermine our system of checks and balances

You can see why I’m so alarmed. We know SCOTUS can’t be trusted to do the right thing. That’s why it’s so important to elect Democrats to state-level offices this year. We need them as a last line of defense against the sabotage of our democracy!
