Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

Please be advised that all phones at our new office are still offline, so we ask for your patience in reaching us as we continue to set up in our new home.

bauhaus.photo is now on display in our gallery until January 31, 2020. Come check out the exhibition in our new space at 1377 R St. NW, Suite 300! If Film|Neu didn't give you a sufficient fix of German-language film, you're in luck: we have partnered with the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center for their 32nd annual European Union Film Showcase, and co-present four critically-acclaimed German films screening throughout the month. We are thrilled that Manifesto: Art x Agency, our project and exhibition in partnership with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, has been extended to April 2020. Catch a screening of Julian Rosefeldt's Manifesto on December 7 at the Hirshhorn. On December 12, artist Adam Pendleton will be present for an artist talk in the scope of the Manifesto project.

If learning German is one of your resolutions for the new decade, now would be a great time to register for January courses at a discounted rate.

In this week's episode of The Big Pond, American singer Linda Ronstadt is interviewed on Chris Strachwitz, the founder of Arhoolie Records.

Until January 31: bauhaus.photo

The bauhaus.photo exhibition opened successfully on Tuesday at the Goethe-Institut Washington, accompanied by a conversation with curator Dr. Astrid Bähr. It is now on view until January 31, 2020, in our gallery space. bauhaus.photo presents classic works by Lucia Moholy, László Moholy-Nagy, and T. Lux Feininger, as well as images by less well-known photographers like Kattina Both, Irene Bayer, and Max Peiffer Watenpfuhl, and a few superb works by entirely unknown artists. Their photos use dynamic diagonals, extreme perspectives, and refined tricks to visualize the experimental and professional approach to the medium of photography at the Bauhaus. The image these pictures convey of life at one of the 20th century’s most important art schools still remains fascinating.

Screening: Manifesto (2016) dir. Julian Rosefeldt

Don’t miss your chance to experience the feature-length version of Julian Rosefeldt’s acclaimed multichannel video work Manifesto. Manifesto features two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett performing thirteen distinct roles in vignettes that incorporate timeless manifestos from twentieth-century art movements. From anchorwoman to punk, from CEO to homeless man, Blanchett executes a chameleonic tour de force, voicing Rosefeldt’s interweaving of history’s most impassioned artistic statements, from Futurism to Pop art to Dogma 95, in this stunning contemporary call to action. Part of the larger project Manifesto: Art x Agency in partnership with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden - now extended to April 2020.

Manifesto: Artist Talk with Adam Pendleton

On Thursday, December 12, artist Adam Pendleton joins Hirshhorn Museum chief curator Stéphane Aquin for a discussion on the conceptual and political underpinnings behind his work - including the installation, Glory, currently on view in Manifesto: Art x Agency.

Adam Pendleton works with appropriated historical documents in collage, painting, video, performance, and installation to explore how context influences meaning. Drawing from a vast archive referencing artistic and cultural movements, such as Dada, Minimalism, and the Civil Rights movement, Pendleton reconfigures words, forms, and images to provoke reflection. Much of his work is informed by Pendleton’s self-defined notion of “Black Dada,” on which he published the Black Dada Reader in 2017, a compilation of manifestos and essays designed to bring disparate voices together around the significance of both representation and language.
