CIJA joins the Toronto community and the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre in mourning the loss of Max Eisen z’l’, a much beloved figure in Canada’s Jewish community. His contributions as a public speaker and Holocaust educator are unparalleled. Universally recognized as a kind, loving person with enormous generosity of spirit, Max will be deeply missed by all of us at CIJA. There are tens of thousands of Canadians who have benefited from hearing Max’s story of courage and tenacity either through his book By Chance Alone: A Remarkable True Story of Courage and Survival at Auschwitz or through the many, many public presentations he has made over the years as a Holocaust educator. Because of Max, the memory of the Shoah will live on through the next generation of Canadians he was able to touch by sharing his personal experience as a child Survivor of the Holocaust. Our extend our deepest sympathies to the entire Eisen family. May his memory be for a blessing.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs mourns the passing of Professor Irving Abella. As a leading Canadian thinker, academic, and public intellectual, Abella made significant contributions to the public conversation in Canada including his ground-breaking work on the Canadian labour movement and his chronicling of the rich history of Canada’s Jewish community. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his “contribution to documenting the story of Jewish Canadians, and his commitment to the principles of social justice and tolerance.”
On Friday, CIJA, the Jewish Federations of Edmonton and Calgary, and CJPAC welcomed more than 250 people from across Canada to Spuds & Suds, our annual Stampede Breakfast, after a hiatus of 2 years. A great time was had by all at the event, which is an important opportunity for our Jewish community leadership to engage directly with elected officials and political staff against the backdrop of the historic Calgary Stampede.
This weekend, Roger Waters performed at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. Why is this worth noting? It was not long ago that Waters, a celebrated icon of rock and roll history, emblazoned the Star of David – a universally recognized Jewish symbol – on the side of a giant inflatable pig of all animals, and then dangled that pig over tens of thousands of fans to make a crass political statement. This toxic act of anti-Jewish racism horrified members of the Jewish community, as has Waters’ recent employment of classical antisemitic tropes.
On July 1 a group of anti-Israel activists accosted, intimidated, and harassed Jewish shoppers at the Chabad Gate Plaza in Thornhill as they prepared for Shabbat. We are grateful for the quick and diligent response of York Regional Police for keeping our community safe. For our collective security, it is important to stay vigilant. If you see something, please say something immediately. Call 911. Then call your local federation to report the incident
