This includes responders and survivors who will be newly diagnosed with 9/11-associated cancers caused by their toxic exposures. Today, the WTCHP provides medical treatment and monitoring for over 100,000 responders and survivors from the World Trade Center and lower Manhattan, the Pentagon, and the Shanksville, PA crash site, who live in every state and in 434 out of 435 Congressional Districts. While Congress extended the program to 2090, the funding needs of the WTCHP exceed the current funding formula. Because of that, as soon as 2024, the WTCHP will not have sufficient funds to provide care for all those still suffering the impacts of 9/11 related illnesses. ANDREW IN THE NEWS N.Y.’s Republican congressional delegation wants Democratic leaders to fix 9/11 healthcare $3B deficit " New York’s Republican delegation to Congress and several out-of-state colleagues are demanding that Democratic leaders in the House act swiftly to plug the estimated $3 billion deficit in funding for the health program that treats 9/11 responders and survivors. In a letter obtained by the Daily News to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), the House Republicans, led by Long Island Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), want the New Jersey Democrat to bring up a bipartisan bill to erase the shortfall immediately. “Let us be clear, if Congress does not quickly address this impending crisis, then the men and women who put their lives on the line and who survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks will lose health coverage to treat the physical and mental illnesses that they sustained from responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” says the letter. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Introduced Bill To Address Fentanyl Crisis This week, Andrew helped introduce the Securing America’s Borders Against Fentanyl Act to bolster the United States’ response to drug trafficking across U.S. borders. The legislation would augment federal research and development into the technologies beneficial to identifying, tracking, and intercepting illicit fentanyl coming through our borders and ports of entry. “Fentanyl is the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18 to 45...We must act decisively to stop gangs and drug traffickers from bringing this poison into our country,” Andrew said. “This legislation would fund research aimed at developing advanced technology for border screenings and require an assessment of the effectiveness of current technologies and strategies to address fentanyl being trafficked into the U.S.” Andrew Proposes Amendments To Annual Defense Funding Bill The process to decide what measures will make it into our annual defense funding bill has begun and Andrew has proposed a series of amendments to strengthen our national security and keep Americans safe. This includes measures like the Small Business Development Center Cyber Training Act and Satellite Cybersecurity Act to protect Americans from cyber attacks perpetrated by our foreign adversaries in Russia and China, the VSO Support Act to ensure our veterans have access to essential services, and the Banning the Vax Mandate for Soldiers to ensure the preparedness of our armed forces is not compromised by onerous vaccine mandates.
