John — The task of federally enshrining reproductive freedom now falls squarely on Congress after the Supreme Court’s callous decision to strip away constitutional protections to the right to an abortion.

Barbara and her Democratic colleagues in the House understood the urgency of the moment we’re in, which is why they passed the Women’s Health Protection Act months ago to enshrine reproductive rights.

But the truth is, any legislative solution in response to the Supreme Court’s egregious decision that does not address the Senate filibuster is unserious.

Barbara has been helping build a movement in favor of abolishing the Senate’s Jim Crow-era filibuster for years. Now, even President Biden has joined the growing chorus demanding, at the very least, a carve out of the filibuster so we can enshrine reproductive rights and protect abortion access immediately.

There is a path forward on abortion rights, but not without undeniable Democratic majorities who are serious about defending reproductive freedom.

Protecting reproductive freedom is an issue of racial justice, economic justice, LGTBQ+ justice, and more. Failure to take direct action to enshrine reproductive rights will have severe consequences on low-income people, LGBTQ+ people, and Black people and people of color.

That’s why Barbara, Co-Chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, and her Democratic colleagues wasted no time passing the Women’s Health Protection Act last September.

But this fight isn’t over yet — not until this bill reaches President Biden’s desk and we take a stand against the far-right’s attacks on bodily autonomy and the right for people to make healthcare decisions free from government interference.
