Last week marked the seventh anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that secured marriage equality nationwide. As the proud sister of two LGBTQ+ siblings and the current representative of Hillcrest, the heart of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community, I welcome this anniversary with joy and gratitude.

However, this year, I also feel a deep disappointment in learning that the same court that affirmed these rights for my siblings and millions of others across the nation, is poised to take them away. Justice Clarence Thomas made it clear in his opinion: they won’t stop at Roe.

As we celebrate San Diego Pride, we need to send a strong message that the LGBTQ+ community deserves equal rights and dignity under the law. Will you add your name to the San Diego Democrats’ petition to show you stand with the LGBTQ+ community?

I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act. This landmark piece of legislation passed the House with bipartisan support over a year ago, but it has yet to pass the Senate.
