About Attorney General Josh Stein

Josh was sworn in as North Carolina’s 50th Attorney General on January 1, 2017. As AG, he has made combatting the opioid epidemic a top priority. He helped enact the STOP Act, the HOPE Act, and the Synthetic Opioid Control Act to reduce overprescribing and to give law enforcement tools to hold drug traffickers accountable. He is also leading the bi-partisan multi-state investigation of the drug manufacturers and distributors that fueled the crisis.

Josh is managing the effort to clear the state’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits by securing funding to test kits, mandating that all newly collected kits be tested going forward, and implementing a new statewide tracking system. Josh has also championed criminal justice reform in the areas of prisoner re-entry, pretrial release, and drug treatment.

Josh recently sued JUUL for designing, marketing and distributing its e-cigarettes to attract young people, including minors. He refuses to see another generation of teenagers addicted to nicotine. North Carolina is the first state to sue JUUL. Josh is also leading a national bi-partisan effort to attack unwanted robocallers who harass and harm telephone subscribers.

Josh currently Co-Chairs the Consumer Protection and Tobacco Committees of the National Association of AGs and serves on the Board of Directors of the Truth Initiative, America’s largest non-profit public health organization.

Josh previously spent nearly four terms in the North Carolina Senate, during which his colleagues ranked him the most effective Democratic Senator. He also served eight years as the Senior Deputy Attorney General for Consumer Protection before that. He also taught high school English and economics in Zimbabwe for two years.

Josh grew up in North Carolina and is a graduate of Harvard Law School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Dartmouth College. He and his wife Anna live in Raleigh and have three children who all attend or attended North Carolina public schools, just like they did.
