Hi John,
It’s been another week of bad news for bodily autonomy in the United States. State-level abortion bans are going into effect, and we’re hearing stories of people in dire need of abortion care being turned away—like the 10-year-old girl in Ohio who was raped and had to travel to another state to obtain an abortion.
During this devastating time, I suggest that Americans can draw inspiration from the global feminist movement. I wrote an op-ed about this in The Chronicle of Philanthropy the day Roe v. Wade was overturned. I invite you to give it a read:
With the Fall of ‘Roe,’ Abortion Rights Groups and Grant Makers Should Look Overseas for Inspiration
This terrible moment is an opportunity for American activists to learn from successful movements for abortion rights, like those in Latin America and beyond. Let’s support cross-border collaborations and join with allies in a global movement for reproductive justice.
As I say in my op-ed, groups like Ipas and our many partners around the world are ready to help. Since 2000, we’ve helped at least a dozen countries expand legal grounds for abortion despite deeply entrenched and persistent opposition movements.
Please make a donation if you haven’t already. We are gearing up for the long fight ahead. With your support, we will bring our global expertise to protect abortion access in the U.S.—and wherever else it’s needed.
In solidarity,
Anu Kumar
