John,

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) recently finalized a new plan that schedules up to eleven offshore oil and gas lease sales over the next five years.

More drilling on public lands is NOT the answer to the global energy crisis. New leases for offshore drilling take on average 10 years to be developed. So offering new leases now just locks in more fossil fuel extraction more than a decade from now, while doing literally nothing for gas prices in the near term. Instead, this will increase the devastating impacts of climate change and further harm coastal communities and ecosystems.

In the midst of a worsening climate crisis, we should be looking for ways to expand clean energy, not fossil fuels. Can you donate to our efforts to elect more pro-environment legislators to Congress and support our SEEC Members fighting to end our reliance on fossil fuels and expand clean energy? Not only is expanding drilling on our public lands horrible for the environment, it also plays into the hands of the fossil fuel industry. Oil and gas companies already hold 8 million acres of offshore leases they aren’t using. Giving them even more will allow them to manipulate markets to an even greater extent than they already are, and pad their profits even more as well.

Stopping new offshore oil and gas leasing would significantly reduce total global greenhouse gas emissions and would help the U.S. get back on track to reaching its climate commitments. That’s why it is critical that we support our SEEC Members in Congress fighting to protect our public lands and end offshore drilling. Can you make a donation to help re-elect our SEEC Members? Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
