The radical conservative majority on the Supreme Court has officially stolen away the right to an abortion. The decision -- made possible by Trump’s three appointees -- now leaves this fundamental right up to state legislatures.

More than 60% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. In 29 of 50 states, a clear majority of people hold this view.

And yet, experts predict that 26 states are likely to criminalize abortion. That shouldn’t happen if state legislatures actually represent the will of the people.

And now, conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court have agreed to hear a North Carolina case that tests a new legal “theory.” The nonsensical “independent state legislature theory,” could give state legislatures complete control of congressional redistricting and federal elections. Under their theory, it is possible that neither governors, nor courts, nor independent commissions get any say in the process.

Are you sensing a pattern?

One can only imagine what our fundamental rights will look like if we lose this fight. Shameless Republican state legislatures will create maps that exclude marginalized communities and pack them into districts to dilute their vote, cementing their ability to create laws that go against the will of the people.

We must protect our rights by ensuring that state legislatures accurately reflect the will of the people.
