John,
Late last night, Pennsylvania’s State Senate voted to waive the rule banning votes past 11 P.M. in order to continue work on the overdue budget. Republicans then took advantage of that to pass a slew of amendments to SB 106 that would start the process to amend the Commonwealth’s Constitution.
These amendments would strip away the right to an abortion, give the gerrymandered legislature the power to disapprove regulations with no chance for the Governor to veto, enshrine voter ID requirements in the Constitution, allow gubernatorial candidates to select their running mates instead of the voters, and establish a system for election audits.
John, it’s no coincidence that attacks on our reproductive rights come along with attacks on our rights to vote against them. They know they’re acting against the will of the voters, so instead of changing course, they’re simply trying to stifle the voters. But we still live in a democracy, and the will of the voters still matters. Will you donate $10 today to help us register and mobilize the Commonwealth’s Black, brown, and young voters to vote in every election, twice a year?

Here’s the problem: Constitutional amendments can’t be vetoed by the governor. And our governor is currently the only thing standing between us and the extremist legislative branch.
But, if the legislature passes this amendment both this session and in the next consecutive session, the amendment will go straight to the voters as a ballot initiative. This will change our state Constitution without recourse — meaning our right to reproductive freedom could be obliterated.
John, here at the New Pennsylvania Project we’re fighting for a Pennsylvania that works for ALL of us — and that includes fighting for our reproductive rights.
Our work just got that much more important. We need to expand the electorate in Pennsylvania to include historically neglected communities of color, immigrant communities, and the youth, and empower these communities to vote in every election — twice a year.
I’m asking you personally, John, will you donate $10 straight away?
