Dear Supporter,

This week, Mike announced policy proposals to fight the scourge of gun violence ([link removed]) and end the era of mass incarceration ([link removed]) – issues that have devastated too many communities across America. The proposals build on his strong record of progress as mayor of New York City and as a national leader in the movement for common-sense gun safety laws.

In Colorado, Mike visited the memorial honoring the victims of the 2012 Aurora theater shooting and spoke with gun violence survivors and activists, including State Representative Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex, was killed in the Aurora shooting. As mayor and as founder of Everytown for Gun Safety, Mike has long fought for common-sense gun safety reforms, and his efforts have helped make progress in states across the country.
Determined to build on that progress, Mike announced a comprehensive gun safety policy plan to create an effective background checks system, keep guns away from people who pose a threat to themselves or others, protect young people in schools and Americans in their homes, tackle daily gun violence in the hardest-hit communities, and confront the gun industry head-on.
Mike joins Mayor Lumumba on a tour of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
In Jackson, Mississippi, Mike met with Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and other community leaders to discuss the importance of criminal justice reform. Mayor Lumumba is focused on stopping violence and creating a fair system of justice – and a number of the programs he has launched were spurred by initiatives that Mike led in New York.
Following their roundtable discussion, Mike announced criminal justice reform proposals that will reduce our country’s incarceration rate – the highest in the world – and fix a system that disproportionately harms communities of color.

Mike is a proven leader on these issues, and many others. He can get it done – because he’s done it before.
GET THE FACTS
* Under Mike’s leadership as mayor, the incarceration rate in NYC fell 39% even as it rose in the rest of the country. And the number of young people confined in facilities fell by 63% – a drop one-third larger than the rest of the country.
* As mayor, he enlisted more than 1,000 mayors from red and blue states to form a national coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
* When he left City Hall, Mike helped found Everytown for Gun Safety and worked to build it into the largest grassroots coalition for gun safety in the country – and a formidable counterweight to the NRA.
* Due in large part to Everytown's effort, 20 states passed significant gun laws last year alone.
