Dear JOHN,

This year’s Fourth of July celebrations were overshadowed by the grief and horror of yet another mass shooting. I sponsor dozens of pieces of legislation that would put a stop to these tragedies, and I’ll never stop fighting to turn them into law and keep families safe. Read more below.

Nothing else we do matters if families don't have a basic sense of safety—if they can't go grocery shopping, or send their kids to school, or attend a Fourth of July parade without fearing it might be the last thing they ever do. The proposals are there; the solutions exist. What we lack is the collaboration to get it done because groups like the NRA have been holding Congress hostage. It's shameful. I co-sponsor dozens of bills that would reduce gun violence and prevent tragic massacres like we saw in Highland Park. I'm pleading with my colleagues to stand up to the NRA and join me in in turning them into law.

It was a privilege to welcome Under Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Security Jill Hruby to the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics—a world-class institution whose cutting-edge research has led to groundbreaking discoveries, supports hundreds of local jobs, and plays a vital role in strengthening our regional economy. I have long been supportive of the Laser Lab’s endeavors, and I’m proud to use my role on the House Armed Services Committee to support this facility.

I was thrilled to stand alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Governor Kathy Hochul, County Executive Adam Bello, Corning CEO Wendell Weeks, and many other partners and community leaders to announce a new, historic investment in our region. Together we announced the opening of two new Corning facilities in the Finger Lakes, bringing hundreds of stable, high-paying jobs to families right here in Monroe County. Additionally, this investment will help ensure American competitiveness with countries like China and further cement our place as a global leader in the semiconductor industry.

This week, Senator Gillibrand and I had the opportunity to visit the Maplewood YMCA and highlight legislation we helped pass to extend local meal programs, giving families the relief of knowing they can put food on their tables during the summer months. I am grateful to my partners in Congress for coming together to enact this important legislation, and I'll continue fighting to reduce hunger for families in our community.
