One woman's story
Bethlehem was just 13 years old when she was raped by her brother. When she became pregnant, a neighbour brought her to the hospital and then to an AWSAD safe house.
“Once I came to AWSAD, I started to get some hope. I realised I need to be there for myself and stay strong.”
After giving birth to a healthy baby girl, Bethlehem was desperate to continue learning and made the most of every opportunity for development that AWSAD provided. Two years later, and after counselling and skills training, Bethlehem was preparing to leave the safe house.
“Sure I wanted to go out and be independent and start a life but I was feeling very lonely. I kept asking myself who would be there for me? Who would I rely on?”
This year's project
For this year’s Christmas Challenge, we want to provide a vital support system for women like Bethlehem.
By supporting the ex-residents group, women starting new lives will be safe in the knowledge that their support will not end once they walk out the doors of the safe house.
Members of the ex-residents group will have access to;
- Support applying for Ethiopian identity cards, a key gateway to accessing their rights as citizens. Without an ID card, women cannot access employment, health or social services.
- Support accessing subsidised rental housing so they can establish a secure home after leaving the safe house.
- Monthly safe-space meetings where ex-safe house residents can meet and support one another as well as welcoming new members who have recently left the safe house.
Match funding
Donations made through the Big Give website will be doubled. That’s right. For every one donation, there will be twice the impact on the ground in Ethiopia.
